Equity and Access for People with Disabilities Policy
Consultation has concluded
How can you help us create a safer and more accessible community?
Council's Equity and Access for Disabilities Policy was created to remove barriers that exist within the Invercargill City District, enabling people with disabilities to participate and contribute in both social and physical aspects of community life.
Our proposed policy is designed to guide Council in removing barriers that may prevent people with disabilities from fully contributing to our community. The core elements of this policy are Communication, Consultation, Accessibility, Advocacy, Partnerships, Prevention and Equal Employment Opportunity.
When drafting our proposed policy, Council undertook early and ongoing engagement with the Combined Disability Network (CDN). We have also utilised relevant feedback received through recent consultation processes, such as our 2024-2034 Long-term Plan, urban projects, regulatory document reviews and Parks and Reserves Plan reviews.
Internally, Council has initiated work to identify opportunities for improved accessibility for people with disabilities, and operationally we are already working on solving some accessibility issues that were identified during our early engagement phase.
Next Steps
Now we want to hear feedback from the wider community.
