Kerbside Waste Options 2025
We're Rethinking Your Rubbish
Invercargill City Council and Gore District Council are proposing a change to your kerbside waste service. We are considering adding a blue bin for glass and a green bin for organics, which includes green waste and food scraps. We want to hear from households in each community about what bin setup they would prefer to have at home.
The reason for the proposed changes is to enable you to recycle more of your waste, to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, and improve the safety and efficiency of our service. Once each council has decided on its preferred service, it is expected that the new service will be implemented in 2027/2028.
You can find out more about the options below, as well as more about WasteNet's kerbside waste service in our FAQs
There has already been some discussion about these options around our Council Tables. In the important links section, you will find links to the live stream of those meetings, and in our key documents section, you can read the reports to Council and review the business case overview.
We are planning joint hearings at the end of the year, so please let us know if you want to speak to your submission, and we will be in touch.
What options are we considering?
We've developed these options based on providing a regional service with regional pricing. The projected costs include the additional investment needed in new bins and collection trucks. The charges will be confirmed based on the final contract negotiation. Southland District Council will be included in the service and will consult with their community about their options in the new year.
