Why are you proposing to sell part of JG Ward Reserve and 38 Suir Street?
We think that by taking true advantage of the location and activating the main corner parcel, this will encourage visitors and residents to stay and play longer in the township. It is important for us to upgrade the space while remaining cost neutral; therefore, not impacting rates. It makes sense to dispose of the underutilised portion of the whole parcel to fund activating the section most accessible visitors to and residents of Bluff
Has Council considered keeping and activating the whole space?
Previous Parks Strategy work has identified this part of JG Ward Reserve as a space with poor location and not fit for purpose. Considering the cost of maintenance, tired play equipment and the low activation of the space, there is the opportunity to invest in a better-quality area for members of the community and future generations to enjoy.
What are the benefits of proceeding to designate the remaining section of JG Ward Reserve as Reserve Land under the Reserves Act 1977?
Classifying reserve land ensures that spaces are legally protected, thoughtfully managed and preserved for future generations. Specific benefits include:
If sold, how will the funds generated from the sale of part of JG Ward Reserve and 38 Suir Street be used?
Our plan is to invest the proceeds generated by sale back into the remaining parcel of land. We cannot start planning the activation opportunities until we learn the value, through the sale process. We think taking true advantage of the location and activating the main corner parcel will encourage visitors and residents to stay and play longer in the township.
How will the sale process be managed?
This will be managed via Council’s Parks Disposal Policy 2015
What will happen to the assets already in place on the Reserve?
Currently we have no plans to remove the statue of Joseph George Ward or the storage building. Options for activating the space will be informed through further engagement as to what community needs are put forward, and the play strategy.
Who will decide what the future activation of the space looks like?
The future design depends on how much money the sale of the other spaces generates, as we are seeking a cost neutral way to upgrade the space. We may seek feedback again from the community to inform how this space could be activated. Our ideas will be informed by the play strategy.
