Why was this playground selected?

We chose this playground location after carefully looking at all the playgrounds across Invercargill. We considered things like how much equipment each playground has, how old and worn it is, how many different types of play it offers, how inclusive it is, and how close it is to school playgrounds. We also looked at the number of people living in the neighbourhood, how well the area is currently served by playgrounds, and whether the community faces any challenges. This helped us find the spot where investment in a whole-playground upgrade would make the biggest difference.

How much is being spent on the playground upgrade?

$120,000 from Parks and Recreation’s existing capital renewal budget is allocated to this project.

Why are you spending this all on one playground?

Following extensive engagement with our community about the Play strategy, we have identified that to meet the play outcomes our community asked for, we needed to rethink the way we look at playground renewals. In the past we have focused on single replacements, but by focusing on a whole playground at a time, we can ensure more inclusive opportunities, be more innovative, work more collaboratively with locals, and be more cost effective.

We will continue to monitor play equipment on a piece by piece basis, and there will always be some money set aside for urgent renewals if a single piece of equipment is damaged or is no longer safe.

Who does Council want to hear from?

Council wants to hear from as many people as possible, including regular users and close neighbours to the park as well as groups or organisations who use the space. We know that parks are not just family and youth-centric spaces, so want to hear from various age groups, young and old, about what is important to them.

I have concerns about some equipment or facilities at another park, how do I let Council know?

If you want to raise a concern about any of our parks and reserves, you can log a request for service via our customer services team. You can do this:

    • In person at Te Hīnaki – Council Administration Building or Bluff Service Centres,
    • Via phone by calling (03) 21 11777

    Online at My Invercargill (icc.govt.nz)
